DESCRIPTION:Only Love (15 minutes)\nDiplomacy (47:30 minutes)\n\nDiploma
cy: The Responsibility to Protect\nU.S.PREMIERE\n\nThat question is answ
ered in this unprecedented look inside the U.N. Security Council. \"Dipl
omacy: The Responsibility to Protect\" is a compelling documentary that
shifts the focus from the killing fields of Darfur to the frustrating ma
chinations of the United Nations. In June 2006\, the country of Denmark
assumed the 30-day presidency of the U.N. Security Council with the sole
goal of passing a resolution to end the genocide in Darfur. Filmmakers
Boris Bertram and Rasmus Dinesen are granted incredible behind-the-scene
s access to the Danish Ambassador and the backroom political dealings in
side the U.N. As the deadline looms\, frustrations and tensions mount wh
ile China and Russia stonewall the resolution. A real life political thr
iller\, \"Diplomacy\" captures a high stakes game of political poker wit
h the fate of a nation as the largest chip. (Michael Burke)\n\nFor detai

nWhen Harris Malden was a boy he was involved in a fire that left him sc

rker. His friends and family have all played along\, understanding Harri
s does it to hide the scars of the tragedy. But on the day of Harris Mal
den's twenty-fifth birthday everything changes. The first feature from P
hiladelphia based sketch comedy group Sweaty Robot\, \"Happy Birthday Ha
rris Malden\,\" is a touching and hilarious meditation on friendship and
honesty. Fans of 2006s \"The Orange Thief\" will appreciate the excepti
onally quirky oeuvre of the film's singular performances and quick wit a
long with all the magical realism that comes with them. The five-man tro
upe's unusually conversational style of comedy paired with their origina

, which the tribes have relied on for thousands of years\, from returnin

to the Klamath each year. The dams are also believed to have created a
toxic water flow that is responsible for the largest fish kill in U.S. h

der Our Skin\" navigates the complicated web of factors that have kept p

. With the constant growth of documentary production in the U.S. and all
around the world\, the question often comes up: are these films viable
commercially? Who and where is the audience? And do these films make t
he kind of impact the filmmakers are hoping for? Five years after the me
teoric success of Fahrenheit 9/11\, are the documentaries holding their
own\, or do they need a mega-hit doc every year to perpetuate the percep
tion of them being financially lucrative? This panel of documentary film
makers and experts will discuss today’s state of documentary filmmaking
and explore new creative ways for a film to succeed in a tight marketpla

DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20081004T174300
DESCRIPTION:\n73 minutes\n\nPerhaps the ultimate musical collaboration b

ose passionate rendition of \"Stand by Me\" could well stand alone. Dire
ctors Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls set out to prove that some of the
best music in the world is played by unknown artists\, driven to perform
on the streets because life without music would be meaningless. Traveli
ng the country and the globe recording tracks for playback\, this homage
to the universality of music is ample proof that\, while politics divid
e\, music unites. Connected by far more than headphones\, these artists
are\, in reality\, connected by the power of music as an instrument for
peace. Uplifting and joyous\, \"Playing for Change\" is at its best when
intercutting songs\, and merely astonishing at other times. While these

brings them together. A musical feast! (Barbara Pokras\, A.C.E.)\n\nFor

DESCRIPTION:87 minutes\n\nBuck Howard's days in the limelight are long g
one\, but once upon a time\, he was Someone. His mind-boggling feats as
a mentalist extraordinaire - not to be confused with those of a mere mag
ician - earned him a marquee act in Vegas and 61 appearances on Johnny C
arson's Tonight Show. In his own humble opinion\, his talents go far bey
ond simple sleight of hand - he can read minds and hypnotize not just a
single soul but an entire room of people! Nowadays\, it's clear to every
one but Buck that his act has lost its luster\; he performs in faded com
munity centers and hasn't filled a theater in years.\nYet\, with a heart
y handshake and a trademark \"I love this town!\" Buck Howard perseveres
\, confident in his own celebrity\, convinced his comeback is imminent.
He just needs a new road manager and personal assistant. As it turns out
\, recent law school drop-out and unemployed\, would-be writer Troy Gabl
e needs a job and a purpose. Working for the pompous\, has-been mentalis
t fills the former requirement. How it satisfies the latter is questiona
ble\, especially to his father\, who still assumes Troy is in law school
. Nonetheless\, with the aid of a fiery P.R. woman and a bold stroke of
fate\, Buck surprisingly lands back into the American consciousness. As
the coveted spotlight again shines on Buck\, both Buck and Troy question
whether or not they have made the right choice in their lives. Much to
his father's chagrin\, Buck becomes the unlikeliest of teachers as Troy
learns a few tricks he couldn't possibly have picked up in law school.\n

DESCRIPTION:94 minutes\n\nIn \"Point Blank\" Lee Marvin plays Walker\, a
reluctant criminal who stumbles into a bad situation and pays dearly fo
r it. After being convinced to join in a criminal heist with an old frie
nd and his wife that takes place in San Francisco at Alcatraz Prison\, W
alker is shot \"point-blank\" by his friend who wants the money and Walk
er's wife all for himself. Walker seems to recover and decides to go aft
er the $93\,000 he is still owed from the job. As the film progresses we
follow him on his quest to confront his would-be killer and recover his
money while leaving a trail of dead and beaten bodies behind him. Of co
urse there's much more to this crime film once you start scratching at i
ts stylish surface. \n\nAbout the film\, director John Boorman said \"Th
is film is really in one sense about Lee Marvin. It's about him as a cha
racter. He went out to the war and he was a sensitive seventeen year-old
boy and you know\, he was brutalized and in a way he was expressing him
self through violence. He was always trying to recapture his humanity th
at he felt he had lost and that's really what the story is about. It's a
bout a man who comes back from the dead and tries to find his humanity.\
"\n\nAfter appearing in countless war films\, westerns and crime dramas\
, Lee Marvin won his first Oscar in 1965 for \"Cat Ballou\" and followed
it up with a starring role in the extremely successful movie \"The Dirt
y Dozen.\" Hollywood was impressed with Marvin's success and they offere
d him complete creative control over his next film. That film would be t
 he stylish 1967 Neo-noir crime thriller \"Point Blank.\"\nThe film was d
irected by the talented British filmmaker John Boorman who Marvin had me
t in London while filming \"The Dirty Dozen.\" Boorman approached Lee Ma
rvin with a poorly adapted script of a pulp novel called The Hunter writ
ten by Richard Stark (pen name for Donald E. Westlake) and expressed int
erest in making a film with him. Marvin hated the original script\, but
he wanted to make the film with Boorman so the two men spent many long e
venings in London working out the details and exploring creative concept
s before finally plunging ahead with their proposal.\n\nDuring this proc
ess \"Point Blank\" became a very personal project for Lee Marvin. He wa
s involved in almost all aspects of the film including the movie's devel
opment\, story\, staging\, sound effects and stunts. Besides just making
an entertaining movie\, Marvin wanted to use various metaphors within t
he film to explore his deep-seated feelings about a career spent playing
violent killers and a lifetime trying to come to terms with the horribl
e things he had experienced during WWII\, where he had served as a snipe
r for the U.S. Marines. (Kimberly Lindbergs)\n\n\nFor tickets and info\,

DESCRIPTION:\n87 minutes\n\nDeeply spiritually profound and still access
ible to all inquisitive minds\, Astra Taylor's documentary \"Examined Li
fe\" confronts huge and mostly unanswerable philosophical questions: Is
there meaning to life and how is it discovered? What part do ethics play
in our actions? What are our ethical duties to others? These issues are
only part of the discussions led by Taylor's selection of highly regard
ed philosophers and academics. From Peter Singer's \"Utilitarian Applied
Ethics\" to Martha Nussbaum's modern spin on Aristotelian societal stru
cture to Slovene philosopher and sociologist Slavoj Zizek's ecological t
 heory concerning human's separation from nature\, Taylor's guests\, whil
e often contradicting one another\, inspire thought and reexamination of
previously held perceptions and beliefs. Taylor brilliantly interviews
her subjects\, alternating between posing probing questions and simply l
istening\, allowing her speakers to explain their concepts and uncover t
heir deeper conclusions. \"Examined Life\" succeeds in shedding a light
on complex and ancient philosophical wonders. (Gabriel Meyers)\n\nFor ti

SUMMARY:TRINIDAD
DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20081003T154100
DESCRIPTION:\n86 minutes\n\nOne wouldn't think of a small town in Colora
do like Trinidad as being the sex change capital of the world\, but the
truth is that it houses the best pre-op\, op and post-op facilities (not
to mention doctors) that field has to offer. This is the foundation of
PJ Raval's and Jay Hodges' new film\, which paints three beautiful portr
aits of transgender women who undergo gender reassignment surgery. \"Tri
nidad\" is one of those special documentaries that requires no interest
in the topic in order to get involved in the story. Dynamic and heartfel
t in their profiles\, Raval and Hodges take great care in choosing their
subjects and utilize a sweet\, yet haunting inquisitive tone that doesn
't let itself get bogged down by the issues and manages to let the chara
cters paint the bigger picture of homophobia in the world around them. A
t times with humor and always with great humanity\, the characters of \"
Trinidad\" will find their way into your heart. (Michael Lerman)\n\nFor

SUMMARY:PLAYING FOR CHANGE: PEACE THROUGH MUSIC
DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20081003T151300
DESCRIPTION:\n73 minutes\n\nPerhaps the ultimate musical collaboration b
egins with Roger Ridley\, a Santa Monica\, California street musician wh
ose passionate rendition of \"Stand by Me\" could well stand alone. Dire
ctors Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls set out to prove that some of the
best music in the world is played by unknown artists\, driven to perform
on the streets because life without music would be meaningless. Traveli
ng the country and the globe recording tracks for playback\, this homage
to the universality of music is ample proof that\, while politics divid
e\, music unites. Connected by far more than headphones\, these artists
are\, in reality\, connected by the power of music as an instrument for
peace. Uplifting and joyous\, \"Playing for Change\" is at its best when
intercutting songs\, and merely astonishing at other times. While these
musicians will likely never meet\, deft editing utilizing split-screen
brings them together. A musical feast! (Barbara Pokras\, A.C.E.)\n\nFor
