 r Rick Beattie has written the sequel to last year's Murder Mystery Rall
 y "Clueless" where contestants were solving a fictitious local murder. I
 n Clueless II\, contestants are once again helping the local constabular
 y by following leads (the rally course) and locating signs or objects th
 at contain clues and answers to help solve the crime.  Contestants will 
 fill  in blanks with the answers\, and be scored on the getting the "cor
 rect" answers. \n\nUnlike last year's version\, this event is a pure gim
 mick rally with no timed legs\, and no checkpoints. Each leg will begin 
 and end at the Garage Room\, so that contestants take almost all the tim
 e they need and grab a snack at any time. (Art Ehrlich used this concept
  a number of times.) Rick will set a time limit after which he will no l
 onger accept answers (6:00PM)  Since this will be a gimmick rally\, ther
 e will be no leg timing\, and no checkpoints. Directions are easy to fol
 low\, but solving the crime will require some thinking.  Rick indicates 
 that Laura had no problem seeing all the signs as they drove the course 
 the first time\, so he expects teams to have no trouble (wink\, wink).

 rts Car Club and rallymaster Rick Beattie will present the Clueless Road
  Rally. In keeping with the BRMSCC’s unofficial Panera Month\, the rally
  will be headquartered at the Panera Bread Restaurant on Route 22 in Mur
 rysville\, Pa.\; two miles or so east of the Allegheny County line\, jus
 t passed the Sheetz. Registration will start at 1:00 P.M. and the first 
 car will receive their first route instructions at 2:01 P.M.\n\nThis ral
 ly is\, for the most part\, a gimmick road rally\, based on Bill Hawkins
 ’ road rally of a few years back. The premise will be an historic and fi
 ctitious local murder. For five of the six legs contestants will follow 
 one page per leg instructions\, presented as paragraphs or maps\, where 
 they will locate signs or objects that fill-in some details of the event
 . These may include the names of the victim\, murderer\, police chief\, 
 investigator\; and other details such as the murder weapon and the locat
 ion of the crime.\n\nLegs will be written with poor puns\, obscure refer
 ences and silly riddles. (The rallymaster’s wife\, Laura\, will help wri
 te the good clues.) Besides pen\, paper and calculator this might be the
  time to dust off the original rally equipment (?) dictionary\, thesauru
 s\, compass and map. Laura knows Spanish but Rick doesn’t\, so one would
  think foreign languages are probably out!  \n\nFor the other leg\, cont
 estants will follow more typically written time-speed-distance (TSD)form
 at to determine the length of perpetrator’s sentence. This leg will be f
 illed with instructions to help everyone calculate their odometer correc
 tion factor and use that factor to determine the correct time. (Rick’s f
 irst draft read like a tax return\, so some changes may be necessary.)\n
 \nEach leg will begin and end at Panera’s\, so that contestants will be 
 able to do the legs in any order\, take almost all the time they need an

 nt will be an easy\, novice-friendly Time-Speed-Distance road rally.  It
  will gently teach (or remind) the contestants of the "basics."  Rallyma
 sters Doug Philips and Jenny Ladd have strived to create a rally that wi
 ll ge gentle on first comers\, but teach the concept of the Main Road ru
 les.  It includes open and do-it-yourself controls\, and visits the area
   of Western PA where Butler\, Beaver\, and Allegheny Counties all meet.
   All roads are paved\, but the winter has not been kind to some section
 s.  Speeds will be at or below the posted limits\, and a lot of attentio
 n has been paid to making sure that contestants don't get lost.  Of cour
 se\, studying the tutorial would be a great idea too. \n\nWhat beginners
  should bring with them:\n\nFor starters - there should be two of you in
  the car: a driver\, and a navigator (who isn't inclined to get car-sick
  reading while moving\, or has an antidote for it). \n\nBring a mechanic
 ally sound car* that has a 10ths -reading odometer (a resetable trip odo
 meter can be a help)\, a clipboard\, a four function calculator\, severa
 l working pens\, a set of highlighters (for marking up the router instru
 ctions) and post-it notes.  \n\nIf you can choose between a mechanical o
 dometer that "rolls" and a digital display\, the mechical will enable yo
 u to interpolate to the 100ths.  If not\, there is nothing in this rally
  that will require any mileage closer than a tenth to determine where yo
 u execute the instruction\, and most road names are identified to help a
 nyway.  \n\nWhile every team has their own procedure\, it's useful to be
  able to highlight things like speed changes\, and free zones (remember 
 - there is a tutorial to get you started!) so that "on the road" it help
 s you remember them better.  The post-its are to stick on your dashboard
  to remind the driver of the assigned speeds and course following priori
 ties are.  \n\n*Not that anyone involved in this has _ever_ broken down 
 in the middle of a night rally and had to wait until 5AM for AAA to loca
 te them! \n\n\n

 0 west of Washington. The finish is at the Starting Line restaurant on U
 S 19 (1.2 miles from the start).\n \nTime:	Registration opens at noon. E
 ntry fee is $7.00. The first car will start at 1:01PM and will finish ab
 out 5:00 PM.\n\nWhat:	The rally is about 85 miles in length and employs 
 both numbered (NRIs) and lettered (LRIs) route instructions. Emphasis wi
 ll be placed on proper application of the Main Road Determinants (MRDs).
  The following MRDs will be used: Onto\, Protection\, Left (Right) at T\
 , Right at Crossroad\, Straight as Possible (SAP) and\, as in previous M
 ovin’ rallies\, the Steel Haul Straight (the Main Road is SAP when a NRI
  referenced to an official mileage is executed). No more than four (4) M
 RDs will be active at any one time. The priority of the MRDs will be cha
 nged from time to time either in the NRIs or the Leg Data Slips received
  at open controls. The rally will run over lightly traveled secondary ro
 ads in rural areas of Washington County. Except for short stretches in o
 therwise paved roads\, all roads are paved including some tar and chip s
 urfaces. Average speeds will not be brisk and participants will not have
  to exceed the posted speed limits to remain on time. Time Allowances (e
 xplained in the General Instructions) may be used if participants fall b
 ehind time for any reason including mistakes of their own or the rally m
