DESCRIPTION:The Greek philosopher Socrates famously said that "the unexa
mined life is not worth living." Taking this as a starting point\, Socr
ates in San Francisco sponsors events in which San Franciscans can begin
a dialogue on "Life\, God\, and other small topics." Leading thinkers
in science\, philosophy\, literature\, religion\, and the arts are featu
red in lectures and onstage conversations about the "big questions." Co
me learn more about Socrates in San Francisco and about the upcoming eve
nt on October 16: a debate between N.T. Wright and Bart Ehrmanentitled A
Good God? A Dialog About the Problem of Suffering and Evil. Over lunc
h\, we will discuss the vision for Socrates in San Francisco\, how you c
an be involved and invite your friends/colleagues to these events and al
so give an introduction to Wright and Ehrman's competing treatments of t
 he problem of evil.

 m. \n\nA Purple State of Mind\nMonday\, June 30 | Discussion Leader: Sco
t Sherman\n\nJoin us as we watch and discuss portions of the new film "A
Purple State of Mind."  This film is a conversation about the things th
at divide and unite all of us: our memories\, our identities\, our belie
fs\, our choices. The conversation between the protagonists Craig and Jo
hn captures in all its intimacy and difficulty a one-on-one reckoning be
tween two people who want to understand each other but won't compromise
their beliefs. At a time when the country is ever more divided over ques
tions of faith and doubt\, this film positions itself as a new way of ta
lking - not red\, not blue\, but "a Purple State of Mind."

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 23
10:45 AM | Russian Center | Classroom #
 1
Instructor: Dr. Grayson Carter\nDietrich Bonhoeffer was one of the mos
t influential theologians of the 20th C. This claim may\, at first glanc
e\, seem surprising. After all\, he wrote relatively little\, and produc
ed no systematic theology\; in fact\, what theology he did write was rat
her fragmentary in nature. He lived to be only 39 years old. He held no
positions of influence or importance in either the church or the academy
. He never married and had no offspring. He made numerous enemies\, was
isolated and ignored by the State Church in Germany\, and was later pers
ecuted for his views. After leaving the Evangelical (i.e.\, Lutheran) Ch
urch because of its capitulation to Hitler\, he even fell out with many
of his allies in the Confessing (i.e.\, opposition) Church. He repeatedl
y turned his back on opportunities for professional and personal advance
ment. In the end\, he was executed by the State mot for being a Christia
n\, but for treason (i.e.\, for conspiring to commit murder) – a charge
that he was most certainly guilty of. \n	So\, how do we make sense of su
ch a fragmentary life? And how do we account for Bonhoeffer’s enormous –
and abiding – influence throughout the world? Come and join us and we t
ake a look at the life of an extraordinary man who continues to inspire
 Christians today.

DESCRIPTION:We live in a culture that values consumerism\, esteems indiv
idualism\, and operates according to the credo that more is better. Many
people excel while others are excluded on the margins of our city\, bar
ely scraping by with enough to eat or money for rent. How do we live in
a culture of such contrasts\, and how do we steward\, or manage our reso
urces when some people have more than enough and others have almost noth
ing at all? In this course\, we will explore the biblical idea of stewar
dship as it applies to our whole lives: our time\, intellect\, finances\
, relationships\, talents\, and care for the environment. You will becom
e more aware of influencers that affect how you invest your time\, treas
ure\, and talent and become empowered to intentionally leverage your res
ources to live in a sense of freedom and joy while helping others to flo
urish\, all as part of the design of the Kingdom of God.

  Center | Gold Room
Instructor: Matt Nault\nConsidering Christianity is
a series of evening gatherings for people who are curious or investigat
ing Christianity and processing ideas of faith\, spirituality\, and the
relevance of Jesus Christ to our lives.  Each evening begins with dinner
and will feature a short lecture on a topic relating to major themes ma
ny people consider when investigating Christianity (Who is Jesus\, what
do I make of the resurrection\, how and why do we pray).  After the lect
ure\, we discuss the evening's topic in a respectful\, thoughtful way an
d there is plenty of space for everyone to ask any question and wrestle
with ideas as we consider who Jesus is\, how he calls people to follow h
im\, and how to respond.  \nYou are invited to join in the discussion as
we explore the Christian faith in a way that is engaging\, meaningful\,
and fun! Considering Christianity meets every Sunday for eight weeks at

r: Dan Gannon\n\nThe Irish band U2 is arguably the most significant rock
band of its generation\, its lead singer is a fella named Bono.  Bono i
s a fascinating figure\, his band sells millions of records and sells ou
t stadiums around the world.  Bono is also a man of deep faith and convi
ction who subtly quotes from the Bible whether it’s a keynote address at
a DATA conference\, the National Prayer Breakfast or the Super Bowl Hal
ftime show. At the same time Bono drops “f-bombs” in interviews\, relays
stories of his nights partying and drinking\; unites legislators\, head
s of state\, and industrial billionaires in order to secure billions of
dollars in debt relief to help lift Africa out of poverty.  Who is this
Irishman\, that even Republicans and Democrats are swayed by him? What c

Instructor: Dr. Greg Love\, \nIf God is all-powerful and loves us like
a parent loves her or his child\, why do horrific things happen to us or
to those we love? Where is God when it hurts? This seminar will inves
tigate three different Christian views of God’s relationship to human su
ffering. First\, we will look at Biblical views which begin with the pr
emise that God is Lord over all things. Next we will investigate Biblic
al views which begin with the idea that God is never the source of evil.
We will end with a contemporary position which incorporates aspects of
both these Biblical beliefs\, and see whether the view makes sense in l
ight of our own experience of suffering.

t ccsfregistrations.tumblr.com\nWhen people hear the word prophet they o
ften think of them as fortunetellers. However\, the message they  procla
imed was one of mercy and justice. The Old Testament narrative is lined
with stories of a people who were called to care for the poor\, to be an
advocate for the oppressed\, and to be an agent of change in the midst
of their culture. Their story continued with Jesus teaching his disciple
s and exemplifying the commandment of loving your neighbor as yourself.
Come learn how the teachings of the prophets and Jesus apply to our live
s and how we can become agents of change in the midst of our own culture
  today.

egistrations.tumblr.com\n\nJesus' primary method of teaching was through
the use of parables--short\, memorable stories that speak about ordinar
y life in extraordinary ways.  We'll talk a bit about contemporary schol
arship\, and why even the most skeptical and critical of scholars recogn
ize that the parables in the gospels reflect the teaching of Jesus himse
lf.  But most of our time will be devoted to exploring the surprising tw
ists\, the riddles and puzzles that make up these distinctive stories.
As we do so\, we will also reflect on the riddles and puzzles of our own
lives\, and how these stories may open us up more deeply to the presenc
e and power of God.\nDr. Jim Brownson is the James and Jean Cook Profess
or of New Testament at Western Theological Seminary in Holland Michigan\
, a seminary of the Reformed Church in America.  He has been studying an
d teaching the parables for 30 years.
