 N. Cornejo (0-1)\; SV: B. Koch (1)\n\n\nMunson homers in fourth straight
loss\n\nBy Jason Beck / MLB.com\n\nDETROIT -- Chicago is not Nate Corne
jo's kind of town. \n\nAfter waiting through a two-hour rain delay for h
is third career start at U.S. Cellular Field\, Cornejo was gone after ab
out a half-hour\, his problems in the Windy City returning. The White So
x\, meanwhile\, were on their way to a 5-2 win in their home opener. \n\
 n\"I haven't had a good time here\,\" Cornejo summarized. \n\nEric Munso
n took a two-run homer 427 feet to right field in the fourth inning afte
r Carlos Peña broke up Esteban Loaiza's bid at a no-hitter. But it was t
oo little after the White Sox had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second
 . \n\n\"It really doesn't mean much when you don't win\,\" Munson said.
\n\nCornejo gave up all four of those runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings\
, tying his shortest career outing. His other 1 1/3-inning effort\, coin
cidentally\, also came in Chicago against the White Sox two seasons ago.
In between\, he gave up five earned runs in 2 1/3 innings last April at
the same park. His only win against the White Sox came at Comerica Park
during his rookie season. \n\n\"I felt good\,\" Cornejo said. \"This is
the best I've felt in a while. I felt I was keeping the ball down prett
y well. The ball was moving well. Just made some bad pitches\, I guess.
They hit them hard.\" \n\nCornejo would have avoided damage in the first
inning except for a seeing-eye\, two-out RBI single that rolled under a
diving attempt from shortstop Omar Infante. That Magglio Ordonez ground
er scored Jose Valentin\, who reached on a one-out double. Frank Thomas
would have doubled in Valentin earlier if not for Bobby Higginson's leap
ing catch at the top of the right-field wall\, crashing into one of the
fence posts. \n\nTigers fielders didn't have a chance to help when Corne
jo was hit hard the next inning. The young right-hander gave up four hit
s to five batters that inning\, including Joe Crede's two-run home run t
o straightaway center field on a fastball. Crede's first home run of the
season and third in 20 career at-bats against Detroit scored Carlos Lee
. \n\nCornejo earned his only out of the inning by keeping the ball dow
n and outside for a three-pitch strikeout of Miguel Olivo following Aaro
n Rowand's single. Cornejo then fell behind D'Angelo Jimenez before tryi
ng to overpower him with a high fastball\, which Jimenez belted for a tr
iple to the right-center field gap. \n\nThat brought Trammell out for th
e first early hook of his young managerial career. \"They were swinging
 the bats\,\" Trammell said of Cornejo. \"He wasn't fooling anybody.\" \n
\nSteve Sparks relieved Cornejo for his season debut and pitched four ef
fective innings until Rowand pulled a double inside third base to score
Crede. The knuckleballer held the Sox to a run on four hits in 6 2/3 inn
ings\, statistics which would have made for one of his best starts last
season. \n\n\"It was nice to keep the game close\,\" said Sparks\, who c
ould be available to pitch again Sunday. \"We had a couple shots to pop
one out of there\, tie it up.\" \n\nSparks can relate to the struggles C
ornejo has had in Chicago. He had the same problems in Tampa Bay before
last season and has encountered challenging stretches in other places ov
er his career. \n\n\"Usually it's more coincidental\,\" Sparks said. \"B
ut then it tends to play in your mind a little bit because the memories
you have of a certain place are a little more fresh. You have a tendency
to remember bad outings more than good outings\, unfortunately. All it
takes is one good outing to erase a lot of that.\" \n\nCornejo himself c
an't put a finger on it\, but he knows it's there. As many as three of t
he hits against him\, he said\, came on pitches he threw where he wanted
\, so it wasn't all a matter of missing his spots. \n\nThe Tigers threat
ened at a comeback\, putting the tying run to the plate twice. Gene King
sale walked leading off the sixth\, but was caught stealing on a 1-0 pit
ch. It was supposed to be a hit-and-run play with Omar Infante at the pl
ate\, but Infante froze on a Loaiza fastball high and inside. \n\n\"Tha
 t can't happen\,\" Trammell said. \"Bottom line.\" \n\nInfante followed
with a single but was retired on an inning-ending double play. Two innin
gs later\, Carlos Peña and Munson drew back-to-back two-out walks off Lo
aiza and reliever Kelly Wunsch. But\, Gary Glover entered and induced an
  inning-ending fielder's choice from Brandon Inge. \n\nWhile Detroit's o
ffense continued to struggle\, held to three hits for the third time in
four games\, Trammell tried to find the positives. \"I thought we battle
d and we had a couple at-bats that were better than the first few games\
,\" he said. \"I know we're searching\, but my gosh\, we have to go on s
omething. \n\n\"I'm going to take something positive. I'm going to take
the Roger Craig school [of thought].\" \n\nTo Cornejo's defense\, he isn
't the only one struggling. The Tigers loss was the White Sox gain\, giv
ing Chicago its first victory of the season. Detroit fell to 0-4. \n

 M. Maroth (0-2)\n\nMaroth doesn't have enough for win\n\nBy Jason Beck /
MLB.com\n\nCHICAGO -- Mike Maroth might soon grow into the ace role he
has inherited. But on a day when the Tigers desperately needed one\, Mar
oth showed all the youthful struggles of a second-year Major Leaguer. He
gave up four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings as the Tigers fell to 0
-5 on the year with a 7-0 loss to the White Sox. \n\n The Tigers were in
need of a dominant performance on the mound in the textbook definition
of an ace's role. They went 0-4 on the first go-around through the rotat
ion and began the day as the only winless team in the American League. W
ith four runs in as many games\, they had little room to fall behind. To
top it off\, they were facing Chicago's top starter\, lefty Mark Buehrl
 e. \n\n\"I really wanted to be the guy that helped the team get its firs
t win\,\" Maroth said. \"I don't think I put too much pressure on myself
\, but I wasn't in my comfort zone. A lot of it had to with a lot of thr
ee-ball counts. All my pitches were OK\, but they weren't consistent eno
ugh. I'm getting behind hitters and that's not my game. It takes me out
of that rhythm that I like to be in.\" \n\nEven as he looked like the an
swer the Tigers' prayers\, Maroth wasn't comfortable. He struck out four
of Chicago's first six hitters\, but needed called third strikes on ful
l counts for two of them. Both pitches grazed the outside corner\, inclu
ding one to Frank Thomas that he didn't like. \n\nBy contrast\, he reach
ed just one three-ball count in the third inning and the White Sox batte
d around. \n\nThe Sox didn't hit Maroth hard. They simply hit him well\
; all three RBI hits were well-placed. Sandy Alomar snuck a ground ball
inside third base for an RBI double scoring Aaron Rowand. Alomar scored
when Tony Graffanino grounded a slow-rolling single through the right si
de with Shane Halter pinched toward second base. \n\n\"The 3-2 pitch to
Alomar down the line\, a couple of feet over it could be a double play\,
\" manager Alan Trammell said. \"It's not. That's just the way things ar
e going right now. But you have to battle through those. You can't start
feeling sorry for yourself.\" \n\nThen with two outs\, back-to-back inf
ield singles extended the inning for another run. Magglio Ordonez topped
a slow grounder to third that didn't reach Eric Munson until Ordonez re
ached first base. Paul Konerko followed with one up the middle that Halt
er couldn't pick up. \n\n\"You get in those situations\, weird things ha
ppen\,\" Maroth said. \"I made some pretty good pitches\, got what I wan
ted\, but that stuff's going happen. You go to the fourth inning\, they
hit the ball hard right at guys. It all evens out. But when they get tho
se infield hits like that\, you hope they spread them out or don't get t
hem with the bases loaded.\" \n\nThe hard hits from the White Sox came l
ater. Frank Thomas hit a 428-foot home run\, his first of the year\, off
Maroth for a 4-0 lead. He was the first of four straight White Sox hitt
ers to reach base\, chasing Maroth from the game. Alomar led off the nex
t inning with another solo homer to left off Chris Spurling. \n\nJose Va
lentin capped Chicago's scoring and his own 3-for-5 performance with a s
olo shot to straightaway center in the ninth off Matt Roney. He also dou
bled in Graffanino in the sixth. \n\n\"I'm very observant\, and I'm goin
g back to the Twins and the White Sox and their approaches\,\" Trammell
said. \"You look at film\, and some of them are decent pitches that they
're hitting. And you wonder why is the other team doing it and we're not
. I can't answer it. That's my question. \n\n\"I know a lot of it is con
fidence\, and right now it's obvious we're not swinging with a lot of co
nfidence. We're hoping things happen. And when you hope\, I know for a f
 act it doesn't work.\" \n\nBuehrle\, meanwhile\, continued his mastery o
f the Tigers in Chicago. He blanked the Tigers on three hits\, retiring
14 consecutive batters from the third to the eighth innings. He didn't f
ace a runner in scoring position until Eric Munson hit a bloop single in
the eighth and reached second on a Brandon Inge groundout. \n\nShane Ha
lter's first-inning grounder to left and Gene Kingsale's bloop single in
the third accounted for Detroit's other hits. It marked the fourth time
in five games the slumping Tigers offense has been held to three hits.
The one time they didn't\, they had four. Their batting average fell a p
oint to .109. If they were an individual player\, their four runs this y
ear would not crack the AL top 13 in runs scored or RBIs. \n\n\"It's kin
d of a tape recording of what we've been doing of later\,\" Trammell sai
 d. \"We just haven't been hitting.\" \n\nWith the ace situation gone\, t
he Tigers might have their best chance at a win all week Sunday with the
ir fifth starter on the mound. Gary Knotts makes his season debut and hi
s second career Major League start against Chicago's Josh Stewart\, maki
 ng his Major League debut.

Bonderman (0-2)\; SV: M. MacDougal (4)\n\nTigers score\, but pitching fa
 lters\n\nBy Jason Beck / MLB.com\n \nDETROIT -- This is the nature of
a losing streak. The offense wakes up\, and the once-reliable pitching f
alters. \n\n The Tigers lineup finally broke out of its season-l
ong slump\, matching their run total for the season and creating their f
irst bases-loaded situation of the year. By the time they did\, though\,
a rough day from Detroit's young pitchers created a larger deficit and
a seventh straight loss in a 9-6 Royals win. \n\n At this point\
, it's progress for manager Alan Trammell. \n\n\"There's no sense beatin
g yourself up all the time\,\" he said. \"We're 0-7 and we're not doing
a whole lot of things well. When we do something well\, we have to look
on it as a positive.\" \n\n Jeremy Bonderman looked more like a
20-year-old rookie in his second Major League start than his first. The
confidence that highlighted his Spring Training took a tick down in Wedn
esday's first inning\, when he walked two of his first three hitters and
threw two wild pitches in the dirt. The second of those brought in lead
off man Michael Tucker with the game's first run. \n\n \n \"I've n
ever had a control problem\,\" Bonderman said. \"I don't walk very many
guys. Today I did. That's the difference between this outing and last ou
ting. I only walked one person but I gave myself a chance out there my f
irst outing. This time I didn't. I got behind every batter. When you do
that\, you're going to throw a lot of pitches and be out of there really
quick.\" \n\n Bonderman (0-2) looked better at times with his s
lider and changeup\, which was a focus for pitching coach Bob Cluck. The
primary problem was his fastball\, which he couldn't control. He went t
o 3-1 counts on four of his five first-inning batters and again on a sec
ond-inning walk\, putting runners on first and second in the second inni
ng. He went ahead 0-2 on Carlos Febles before going to the slider for an
inning-ending double play. \n\n That double play never came in
the third. He threw first-pitch balls to all five batters he faced\, giv
ing up three singles\, a walk and a sacrifice fly. That loaded the bases
for Dee Brown\, who greeted lefty reliever Wil Ledezma by lining a 1-1
pitch deep to right-center for his first career grand slam. \n\n
That finished Bonderman's line with five runs allowed on four hits and
four walks in 2 1/3 innings. He threw first-pitch strikes to just two ou
t of 14 batters. \n\n \"Both Jeremy and Ledezma had trouble gett
ing first-pitch strikes\,\" Trammell said. \"At this level\, at any leve
 l\, that's not going to do it.\" \n\n \"There's no sense beating
yourself up all the time. We're 0-7 and we're not doing a whole lot of t
hings well. When we do something well\, we have to look on it as a posit
ive.\" \n\n Bonderman will get more chances to do it at the big-
league level. \"Absolutely\,\" Trammell said when asked if he'll give hi
m another start. \"We'll talk about it a little bit later on with our co
aches. I think it might be something of a confidence issue. Maybe he's g
iving hitters too much credit.\" \n\n While Bonderman admitted f
 rustration\, he didn't short-change himself on confidence. \n\n\"I stil
l feel I have the capability and I know I'm ready to be here\,\" he said
. \"I just haven't been putting it out on the field. I haven't done anyt
hing that I did in Spring Training. It's kind of frustrating\, but you h
 ave to keep moving ahead.\" \n\n Brent Mayne's three-run homer o
ff Ledezma in the fifth credited the Royals a 9-1 lead before the Tigers
made their comeback attempt. Bobby Higginson singled leading off the si
xth and scored on Omar Infante's triple to the deepest portion of the ne
w wall in left-center. Carlos Peña quickly sacrificed Infante home.
\n\n A Dmitri Young single -- ending his 0-for-12 slump -- and walks
to Eric Munson and Brandon Inge loaded the bases for Ramon Santiago\, w
ho tied Munson for the team lead in RBIs with one swing. He worked relie
ver Jason Grimsley to a full count\, then belted a slider over the plate
into the right-center field gap for a bases-clearing double. \n\n
Albie Lopez started the next inning with eight balls out of his firs
t nine pitches\, bringing up Peña with the potential tying run. That opp
ortunity vanished when Infante was caught leading too far off first base
on a pitch in the dirt\, starting a rundown that ended with Infante on
second and lead runner Higginson tagged out. Lopez fanned Peña then did
the same to Young\, his third strikeout of the game. \n\n \"He w
as OK on the secondary lead as far as the pitch\,\" Trammell said. \"But
once it went in the dirt he kind of got lost. He might have been able t
o advance if he was the only guy on base\, but he wasn't. I don’t want t
 o harp on it because it's a young mistake.\" \n\n Punctuating th
e run of bad fortunes\, the Tigers hit an untraditional walkoff single o
n Peña's ninth-inning grounder up the middle. It hit Higginson running b
etween first and second base for the game's final out. \n\n \"Th
at shouldn't happen either\,\" Trammell said. \n\n The Tigers' b
est hitting performance\, raising their average from .133 to .144\, came
at the price of a season-high 12 strikeouts. Six of those made a career
best for Royals starter Jeremy Affeldt\, who used his roundhouse curveb
all and fastball to post his first win as a starter. Two of his four car
eer victories have come against the Tigers. \n\n Higginson went
2-for-2 with three walks\, his second multi-hit effort in as many games.
Mayne led the Royals with a 3-for-5 game\, stretching his run to 10-for
 -14. Joe Randa also went 3-for-5. \n\n

 es Maroth's gem\n\nBy Jason Beck / MLB.com\n\nDETROIT -- Mike Maroth can
't do much more for a win. A couple of bounces made sure the Tigers stay
ed winless and the Royals unbeaten. \n\n Clinging to a 1-0 lead on a ge
m of a shutout\, Maroth lost it on a sharp grounder that bounced off fir
st baseman Carlos Peña and a wild pitch that catcher Brandon Inge couldn
't find. Raul Ibanez greeted reliever Jamie Walker with a two-run homer
to seal a 4-2 Royals victory. \n\n Maroth looked early on like he could
single-handedly pitch the Tigers to a victory\, facing one batter over
the minimum through four innings. He took a one-hitter into the sixth be
fore giving up back-to-back singles to Joe Randa and Mike Sweeney. Raul
Ibanez followed by slapping a hard ball that one-hopped Peña as he tried
to smother it. The ball bounced from first base all the way into short
center field as Randa rounded third for the tying run. \n\n Maroth's ne
xt pitch was a slider in the dirt. Like Peña\, Inge tried to smother it.
However\, the ball bounced in front of his glove\, off his padding and
to his right as he looked around for it. By the time he spotted the ball
\, Mike Sweeney was on his way to home plate\, which he crossed without
 a throw. \n\n Maroth (0-3) finished with his second two-run\, seven-inn
ing performance in three starts this year\, lowering his earned-run aver
age to 3.93. He tied Atlanta's Greg Maddux for the Major League lead in
losses\, though Maddux has struggled to a 11.05 ERA. \n\n The Tigers of
fense posted six hits but stayed in the game with help from four Royals
errors\, two of which led to both Detroit runs. Bobby Higginson led off
the first with a single off starter Miguel Asencio (1-0) and scored when
Kansas City second baseman Carlos Febles couldn't hold onto a Dmitri Yo
ung grounder. \n\n Detroit's lineup struggled from there. Once the Roya
ls took the lead in the sixth\, reliever D.J. Carrasco shut down the Tig
ers with six straight strikeouts. \n\n The Tigers mounted a ninth-innin
g rally with back-to-back walks from closer Mike MacDougal. Peña's groun
d ball nearly ended the rally with a double play\, but MacDougal whiffed
covering first base on the double-play throw\, allowing Higginson to sc
ore. Young\, coming up as the potential tying run\, grounded to short to
end the game\, leaving the Tigers with 11 stranded baserunners for the
 game.

ter\n\nBy Chris Hester / Special to MLB.com\n\nSEATTLE -- An infield gro
undout and a hard slide into second base helped the Detroit Tigers find
the win column for the second time in a week as they topped the Mariners
6-4 in front of 36\,258 at SAFECO Field in Seattle Saturday night.\n\n
The Tigers snapped a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh inning when Dmit
ri Young came to the plate with runners on the corners and only one out
against Seattle reliever Giovanni Carrara. Young slapped a grounder to t
hird basemen Mark McLemore who briefly checked the runner at third\, Sha
ne Halter\, before throwing to second for the force on Carlos Pena. Hal
ter broke for home\, but before second basemen Bret Boone could throw to
the plate\, Pena's hard slide knocked Boone's legs out from under him a
llowing Halter to score the game winner.\n\n \"I thought it was a clean
hard play\,\" manager Alan Trammell said of the game winning play. \"Go
od hardball. That was the play of the game.\"\n\n Detroit added an insu
rance run in the ninth off Seattle reliever Jeff Nelson when Halter reac
hed second base on a bunt single and a throwing error. He advanced to t
hird on an infield groundout and scored on a passed ball.\n\n\n\n\n\n Ja
mie Walker (1-0) worked 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief for his first wi
n of the year while Matt Anderson nailed down his third save of the year
despite allowing a pair of hits in the ninth.\n\n \"We did a couple go
od things tonight\,\" manager Alan Trammell said following the win. \"T
hey've been few and far between\, so I'm very happy.\"\n\n Franklyn Ger
man pitched in with a pair of eventful innings of shutout baseball. He a
llowed runners to reach second and third in both the seventh and eighth
innings\, but kept Seattle off the scoreboard by wiggling off the hook b
oth times.\n\n The Tigers bullpen has pitched 10 2/3 scoreless innings
in the first two games of the series.\n\n \"There's seven of us out the
re and that's our job\,\" the winning pitcher Jamie Walker said of the b
ullpen's performance. \"When they call for us the game's on the line.
You get five minutes of fame\, you do the job or for 24 hours you're the
scapegoat.\"\n\n \"We want to win more. Not just one\, we want to star
t winning some series. Tomorrow we got a chance for two out of three so
 that's what we'll shoot for\,\" Walker added.\n\n\n\n\nTiger's starter G
ary Knotts was given a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth\, but the right-
hander struggled with his control as only nine of his 25 pitches in the
inning found the strike zone. He left after retiring just one batter in
the fifth while allowing one hit and walking three\, one with the bases
loaded.\n\n The left-hander Walker followed and got out of the bases l
oaded jam allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Willi
e Bloomquist putting Seattle back on top by one run at 4-3.\n\n Knotts
worked 4 1/3 innings on the night allowing four runs on six hits while w
alking four and striking out two\, but received a no decision.\n\n \"I'
m not going as deep into games as I'd like to\, but I try to build off t
he positives of each start\,\" Knotts said of his start. \"The first fo
ur innings were great. I was getting ahead and getting ground balls and
just keeping the team in the game.\"\n\n The Tigers deficit didn't las
t long. Brandon Inge's sacrifice fly scored Young from third base in th
e sixth inning evening the score at four and setting the stage for the g
ame winner an inning later.\n\n The Mariners opened the scoring in the
bottom half of the third inning when Carlos Guillen worked a six-pitch w
alk from Knotts after falling behind 0-2 in the count. Ben Davis follow
ed by hitting the first pitch he saw into the bleachers in right field f
or his second home run of the year putting Seattle on top 2-0.\n\n Det
roit shortstop Omar Infante helped keep Knotts out of more trouble by ma
king a spectacular play to rob Randy Winn of a base hit later in the thi
rd inning. The left-handed hitting Winn fired a hot shot grounder up th
e middle. The Tiger shortstop moved to his left and gloved the ball bef
ore making a 360-degree turn and throw to first in time to get the speed
y Winn as his momentum carried him into centerfield. \n\n The out prove
d to be a big one as the next two Mariner hitters reached with base hits
\, but Knotts was able to escape the inning without allowing another run
when he got John Olerud to fly out to left field to end the inning.\n\n
Detroit answered the Mariners runs with one of their own in the top of
the fourth thanks to a Shane Halter solo home run\, a 418 foot blast to
centerfield that snapped the Tigers 22-inning scoreless streak. It was
Halter's second home run of the year and only the seventh all season fo
r Detroit.\n\n \"Whenever you get the opportunity to play you have to m
ake the most of it\,\" Halter said of his start at second base. \"That'
s what we did tonight. I made the most of my opportunities and it paid
off.\"\n\n The Tigers took the lead an inning later when an Eric Munson
single and a double by Craig Monroe put runners on second and third wit
h nobody out. Following a Brandon Inge groundout that couldn't advance t
he runners\, Omar Infante and Bobby Higginson both delivered run scoring
bloop singles in front of the Seattle outfielders to give Detroit their
first lead of the series at 3-2. \n\n Seattle starter Ryan Franklin es
caped the inning without allowing another run by getting Shane Halter an
d Carlos Pena to fly out to Ichiro Suzuki in right field.\n\n Franklin
(1-2) took the loss for Seattle as the Mariners five game hitting streak
  came to an end.

in Seattle. Detroit ended their 12-game road trip with a 2-10 mark.\n\n
Bernero (0-4) worked seven innings allowing four runs on five hits\, no

from Garcia and deposited it in the right field bleachers for his secon

t has hit more than one home run in a game.\n\n Each time the Detroit h

same inning. The Mariners answered Young's homer with a run on an infie
