DESCRIPTION:Translating English Idioms into ASL\n \nPresented by Jean Pl

 ation:\nNorth Central University\n910 Elliot Ave\nMinneapolis\, MN 55404
\nLocated in “The Chapel” in the Trask Worship Center which is at the in
 tersection of E. 14th St and Elliot Ave.\n \n This fun\
, \"hands on\" workshop will analyze the meaning of common idioms\, slan
 g expressions\, cliché’s\, etc. used in our everyday language.\n \n
You will work from lists with several different idiomatic expressio
ns from the English language. You will work in small groups to better un
derstand the meaning and usage of these expressions\, and then focus on
interpreting them into American Sign Language. After the groups have com
pleted the task of finding semantic equivalents to the English phrases\,
representatives from groups will present to the entire class as a whole
  for discussion and feedback.\n
                           \n The more advanced interpreters\, w
ill be encouraged to “back translate” from the ASL utterance into the En
glish idioms\, clichés\, etc. You will examine your work from English in
to ASL and vice versa to make voice interpretations\, and when appropria
te\, more \"colorful\" interpretations with the use of idiomatic express
ions.\n \n*This workshop requires little to no content knowledge.

DESCRIPTION:First Comprehensive Film on Deaf History Premieres on PBS Ma
rch 21\, 2007\n\n“Through Deaf Eyes” is a two-hour HDTV documentary for
PBS exploring nearly 200 years of Deaf life in America. The film presen
ts the shared experiences of American history – family life\, education\
, work\, and community connections – from the perspective of deaf citize
ns. Interviews include community leaders\, historians\, and deaf Americ
ans with diverse views on language use\, technology and identity. Bringi
ng a Deaf cinematic lens to the film are six artistic works by Deaf medi
a artists and filmmakers. Poignant\, sometimes humorous\, these films dr
aw on the media artists’ own lives and are woven throughout the document
ary. But the core of the film remains the larger story of Deaf life in
America -- a story of conflicts\, prejudice and affirmation that reaches
the heart of what it means to be human. “Through Deaf Eyes” will be bro
adcast nationally on PBS on Wednesday\, March 21 at 8 p.m. Central Time
 (check local listings).

DESCRIPTION:NIC Performance Preparation - Pieces of Eight\nCreating Effe

 aster\nSaturday\, November 10th 10am-4pm\nAND* Sunday\, November 11th 10
 am-2pm\nCost $99 / Students $75 - 0.9 CEU's\n*Participants must attend b
oth days of the workshop\n \n The NAD-RID National Interprete
r Certification (NIC) exam is a new paradigm. As the NIC exam is a radic
al departure from the approaches of the CI & CT tests\, and the NAD/ACCI
tests\, many candidates report feeling ill-prepared for what to expect.
RID has produced the NIC Practice DVD\, but candidates have requested g
uidance through the DVD. This workshop is designed to help participants
feel more at ease with the procedure and approach of the new NIC exam.\n
\n Participants will be walked through the eight performance
scales to ensure understanding of rating metrics\, and then guided thro
ugh the Performance portion of the NIC Practice DVD. While no test conte
nt will be shared or discussed\, candidates can feel comfortable with te
sting procedures\, and confident about accurately representing themselve
 s. Using stimulus videos\, participants will observe each other interpre
ting for practice situations to help make sure all eight domains are bei
ng addressed.\n \n-This workshop requires some content knowledge of the
material.\n \nTo register for this workshop\, please visit our website a
 t: www.aslis.com/workshopregistration.html\nYou may also register over t
 he phone by calling 763-478-8963\n \nImportant Information\n \nWorkshop
